Meeting a Special Person

September 12, 2007

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Having a sad face is not really normal to me as a start of the day or maybe I was just getting bored with my daily routine. I’m not really in the mood to start my day but still, I have obligations to do in order to survive this uncertain world. So I prepared my things for work and left the house in peace for another boring adventure to the office.

As I walked to the main road (with a plain face emoticon) where I can ride a Public Utility Jeepney for my transportation, it made my day a little worst because of those irritating "dispatchers" approaching me. Their job supposed to be is to "assist" passengers to ride their Jeepneys but intead, they lead me to their Jeepney by blocking my way. Another thing that I really hate is that it would take a long time just for those jeeps to go, we also called it "torno" in our dialect. So what I did is ignore those "dispatchers" and waited for better jeeps that will not stop over for a long time. Luckily after a few minutes of waiting, a new jeepney arrived with lots of passengers in it. I stepped on the jeepney and it immediately drove away.

As I was waiting until I get to my destination, a man beside me wearing a white polo and khaki pants suddenly smiled at me and said, "how are you?". I immediately answered that I’m fine and wondered who the person was. Have we met? Do I know him? Who is he? Those are the questions that ran inside my mind and I kept thinking who he was until I saw his I.D. indicating that he is from a special school. He smiled back at me as I answered his question. He changed the atmosphere inside the jeep, everyone had a sad face before because of they were anxious of being late. I looked around and watched them smiled at the guy. I never thought its much better to have a mentally deficient person around. Most people just laugh at them but to me they are the most friendly and caring stranger I’ve ever met. He even accomodated new passengers, he helped them carry their heavy baggages and offered them a nice seat as he pushed himself further just to make a vacant seat for the new passengers. After a while, we reached the heavy traffic area and again everyone is anxious including the people from the other vehicles. Still, this guy smiles and started talking about his interests. Again, the atmosphere changed back to the way it was. Everyone is smiling again and the feeling of anxiety slowly disappears. I looked outside and looked at the people from the other vehicles. I can see the anxiety from their eyes as they look how heavy the traffic was. A few moments have passed, the guy started to greet the people outside. He waved his hands and teased those people outside by making a funny face. The people outside smiled and laughed at the guy. He doesn’t care how funny he can make with his face but I can see that he want those people to smile.

I was having second thoughts about that guy. Is this guy really mentally deficient? Most people would think that retards are stupid but from what I saw, they are smarter than us because they know which is more important in life. A simple smile can change everyone’s mood and he knows that being happy is more important than being anxious because of some unwanted situations. I learned something from that guy. I realized that life is made simply to be happy, there is no need to complicate our life about wealth and power. We also don’t need to make the situation control us, its up to us if we decide to be happy.

PS: When the guy from a special school reached its destination. I watched him stepped outside the jeepney and he smiled at every person he passed by.
